What is Urbanal?

Urbanal is an ongoing art project which investigates the presence or absence of ‘nature’ within the increasing amount of urban environment we inhabit. This involves documenting my experience as a painter, following the Western tradition of landscape painting. How do the paintings I produce contribute and shape ideas about ‘nature’? How can I bring back ‘nature’ into environments that are ‘Urbanal’? *

* Urbanal a. n. A location which is a combination of the urban and the banal. Contains homogeneous architecture and flora and fauna which is limited, streamlined or replaced with something elseā€¦

I have taken on the persona of a late 18th century landscape artist to help reference the tradition of 18th and 19th century English landscape painting and question the role of the artist in depicting landscape and the construction of ideas about ‘nature.’ There are references to John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough, because they created iconic landscape paintings that were made in a studio, from memory or with reference to sketches and models. My inspiration comes from the writings of Jean Baudrillard, Hal Foster, Miwon Kwon, Lucy Lippard and Kate Soper.
